CityNews - What Could Have Been

Despite Rogers' complete ineptitude and lack of interest in pretty much everything broadcasting, they own some pretty good assets, and the assets all...

Despite Rogers' complete ineptitude and lack of interest in pretty much everything broadcasting, they own some pretty good assets, and the assets all compliment each other. Which is important. That includes the license for the CityNews Channel. The best thing is that all these assets could work together.

(The potential) CityNews Channel could be a hub for all their channels, cross-promoting and expanding viewership for each of them. It can be done CHEAP, too, since most of the required programming already exists. Here's what each could contribute:

Citytv - The obvious stuff, like BT and CityNews updates throughout the day. Maybe have a segment with movie and music news, like the old days. (Maybe partner-up with AUX on this.) Take back the style CP24 took from them, but not chirpy, vapid, and overproduced.

680 News - Traffic reports, like the old CP24 partnership.

OMNI - Multicultural news and perspective, which is quite a huge deal in Toronto. An actual edge over CP24. Also, an international news platform, replacing the defunct CityNews International.

Rogers Community Channel (or whatever it's called) - They have some locally-focused call-in shows, and community events.

SportsNet - Sports news. Fairly obvious.

OLN - Their focus is blurry at the moment, but a news segment on outdoor activities would be a great addition. A cottage report, maybe? Ski reports in the winter? It doesn't actually have to be produced by OLN itself, but the OLN branding would apply well and drive viewers.

G4 - Technology and gaming news all the way. Nerd culture is growing. This is a no brainer. Get the Electric Playground guys to produce a segment for the channel, and get some internet integration going.

Of course, I have no actual hope of this ever happening. I'm just yelling into the wind. I'm 99% certain no one at Rogers Media knows this forum exists, and even if they did, they is zero enthusiasm there in building their television division. They're all a bunch of MBAs just happy to be hanging onto their jobs for now. This is just a dream of what could be for that family of stations if they ever got their act together (and weren't deathly afraid of treading further into CTVgm's territory.)

The Booth at the End: Friday, August 27 at 12:00am ET/PT/CT/MT
From the Shorts in the City Series on Citytv.com, The Booth at the End centres on a mysterious Man (Xander Berkeley, 24) who sits at a booth at the end of a diner. People come to him with requests and the Man can make these things happen - for a price. In exchange for what they want, these individuals must sacrifice their morals and do deeds normally inconceivable to them. They must return to the Man and describe every step in detail. As the characters' tasks begin to overlap, complications ensue. But the Man never forces anyone to do anything. It's always up to them to start - or stop - with one lingering question: "How far would you go to get what you want?"
** The Booth at the End is a first for Citytv, releasing the series originally on the web earlier this month followed by a 2 hour special television presentation.

Citytv Fall Schedule Change: Cityline moved so it wont compete with Marilyn Denis

Citytv has changed its mind and has decided to NOT air Cityline at 10:00AM this fall, where it would directly compete against The Marilyn Denis Show...

Citytv has changed its mind and has decided to NOT air Cityline at 10:00AM this fall, where it would directly compete against The Marilyn Denis Show on CTV.

Citytv had originally planned to air Cityline at 10:00AM this fall (allowing them to simulcast The Nate Berkus Show at 9:00AM), but then CTV announced that The Marilyn Denis Show will air in the same time slot. Cityline has been moved back to 9:00AM. The Nate Berkus Show will now air at 10:00AM on Citytv in POST-Release, and at 9:00AM in simulcast on OMNI 1

Although I think overall it is a smart move by Citytv, it does make it look like they don't have enough confidence in Cityline to have it compete vs Marilyn Dennis.
